Artist Stefan Sagmeister
Project The Masters Series: Stefan Sagmeister
Location SVA Chelsea Gallery, New York
Design legend Stefan Sagmeister has built an international reputation for his provocative and profound designs which redefined the status of designers. From Grammy awards for album covers to the groundbreaking use of his own body as a medium Sagmeister seems to be on a lifelong quest to illuminate the landscape of happiness and open people's eyes to absurdity in everyday life.
It was therefore quite an honnor to be invited by Stefan to collaborate on a large animated mural for his first major retrospective exhibition.
Commissioned by the SVA Galleries in New York, the collaboration materialised as a 16-meter-long dynamic timeline showcasing key images and objects selected from Sagmeister's four decade-long visual explorations.
In collaboration with Stefan, Interval picked key works from his extensive archives - from cult album covers for Talking Heads, Lou Reed and the Rolling Stones to iconic agency work, from student research all the way to his recent “Now is better” series of historic paintings with contemporary inserts.
The studio seamlessly integrated those special edition books, design objects and printed images with mapped projections of graphic elements, motion design animations and subtle lighting to create a dense yet dynamic timeline. To give extra depth into his artistic journey, facsimile of all of Stefan’s very own sketchbooks were exhibited right under the timeline.
